carpenter ant up close

No matter what time of year you are reading this article, it is carpenter ant season in South Florida! That’s right, carpenter ants are a year-round threat. And if they choose to invade your Tequesta home and establish their nests inside, they can create issues for you throughout the spring, summer, and even into the fall and winter months.
The climate of South Florida provides carpenter ants with the perfect conditions to thrive, meaning they can remain active in nature all year long. However, it is much easier for them to survive when they invade our homes. And because of this, carpenter and are the most common indoor pests in Florida!
In our service area, the time of year that we receive the most complaints about carpenter ants is during the spring, which is their swarming season. This is when male and female reproductive ants emerge from their mature colonies and take to the air. Those reproductives then find a mate and begin their own colonies. These winged carpenter ants can often be found on inside windows panes or crawling around on the exteriors of homes; you'll also likely find them in damp areas or around areas of decaying wood. However, just because these ants become the most problematic in the spring, that is not to say that these pests don’t cause problems throughout the rest of the year. Like we mentioned before, these ants are a year-round problem!
Florida carpenter ants are the largest ants you'll find in your Tequesta home. Carpenter ant workers vary in size from 5.5 to 11 mm, with minors being on the smaller end and majors leaning toward the larger end of the spectrum. The largest members of Florida carpenter ant colonies are the winged females which can be as long as 20 mm in length! These ants are reddish-brown to orange in color with a black front body section.
If Florida carpenter ants find their way into your home, they can damage wood that has been softened by water and further the damage to those areas. When you address moisture problems in your home such as broken gutters, leaky spigots, and compacted soil around your foundation, not only will you be protecting your home, you'll be working to resist carpenter ants as well!
While Florida carpenter ants aren't as destructive as their Northern cousin the black carpenter ant, they are still able to cause quite a bit of damage when they establish themselves inside our homes. And if an infestation remains untreated, these ants can cause some serious problems.
Florida carpenter ants also bite. This is something to consider when dealing with these ants, especially if you open up a wall and find a nest inside. These are large ants, so their bite can be painful and if they spray formic acid into the wound, those bites will become even more painful.
What do I do about carpenter ants?
Every home in South Florida should have a year-round pest control plan in place. While they can be destructive, carpenter ants aren't even close to the worst pests you can have living in and around your home. In Tequesta, we deal with dirty cockroaches that are known to spread over 33 different kinds of bacteria and 7 types of parasitic worms. We face house flies which a recent study has strongly confirmed that these disgusting insects are linked to over 65 diseases. We fight ticks which can carry chronic diseases that can cause lifelong health complications and rodents such as mice and rats which are mechanical vectors for bacteria and biological vectors for human pathogens. And, of course, the ever-increasing threat presented by tiger mosquitoes!
