What's On My Tequesta Lawn?
April 17, 2018
There are several pests that invade our yards. Some are easy to identify. Some aren't so easy to identify. Let's look at the most common lawn pests in Tequesta and discuss ways you can properly identify your problem.
Most of us know what a mole looks like, but sometimes mole damage can be mistaken for damage caused by other pests. If you have a mole issue, you're likely to see raised tunnels running through your yard like lightning bolts. You're also likely to see volcano-like mounds of dirt. Moles displace a lot of dirt when they tunnel.
If you have a vole issue, you may think you have mice in your yard. Voles are small rodents that look like mice. But, unlike mice, voles are lawn-damaging pests. The damage they do may look similar to mole damage at first glance because these pest animals will create lightning bolt-like patterns in your yard. But these patterns will be trenches in your turfgrass rather than raised tunnels. You are also likely to see damage at the base of trees in your yard.
Sod Web Worms
These caterpillars feed from the top of your grass downward. If this is the problem you're dealing with, your grass will look like someone took a weed wacker to your grass. You should also see areas of dead grass and silken webs in your grass.
This is an appropriate name for these pests. When you have these caterpillars attacking your grass, they will move through your yard rank and file, destroying your grass as they go.
If you're seeing tiny raised tunnels that seem to be too small to be mole tunnels, you're probably looking at mole cricket tunnels. This is how they got their name. Sometimes their tunnels are not visible because they are hidden by your grass. The first sign of mole crickets will be dead or dying grass.
These white grubs are the larvae of June beetles. If this is the problem you have, you're likely to see yellow patches in your lawn or areas of dead grass. These patches will be random blotches in your yard.
While damage caused by chinch bugs can look similar to grubs, it will not be random. They will start in one location and work their way out in a radial pattern.
