Most Common Ants Found In Lake Worth
April 30, 2018
If there is one pest that homeowners do not take seriously enough, it’s ants. They are small, they aren’t that scary, and all it takes is one stomp of the foot and the problem seems solved. Right? This may be true, but if ants aren’t taken care of correctly they can become overwhelming to deal with. The most common ants to Lake Worth are carpenter ants, fire ants, and black crazy ants. These may all be small and seem to be pretty similar, but they are different in a lot of ways.
Carpenter ants are large, ranging in size from 1/5th to 1/2 of an inch in length. The majority of their bodies are red-orange but their front is black. These ants are highly attracted to damaged wood, though they do not consume it. If you have an infestation you may see small piles of sawdust around your home. They are from creating tunnels in the wood for their nests. They eat sugary items and other insects. Because of how similar they are to termites, it’s important to have a professional to accurately identify them. Two tips that you can use to prevent carpenter ants are:
Don’t leave out sweets and clean up spills and empty soda cans
Move wood away from the home and clear wood debris from your property
Fire ants are smaller, usually about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch long and they are dark brown or red. You may recognize a fire ant infestation from the dome-shaped mounds that they create in the ground. If this mound is disturbed, the fire ants become very protective and will attack and sting. This is a huge problem for homeowners, especially those with pets and children. Fire ant venom produces a painful, stinging and burning sensation and has been known to cause severe allergic reactions. Here are a couple tips that may help prevent fire ants:
Repair any moisture/water problems your home or property may have i.e. unclogging gutters, remove any standing water
Don’t leave out any fruits, syrups, or other sugary items that would draw them onto your property
However, the most important thing for you to know when it comes to fire ants is to avoid their mounds as best as possible and seek medical treatment if stung.
Black crazy ants are called crazy for a reason. These ants can cover food quickly and are usually seen foraging along baseboards and carpet edges— if you see one, there are 100 plus following. Their trails are unorganized, loose and when they are disturbed they scatter in every direction. They are dark brown to black and are tiny, about 1/8 of an inch in size. Key prevention tips black crazy ants are:
Avoid leaving food out, black crazy ants are attracted to both sweets and grease
Seal cracks around windows and doors because they can get in through the smallest of holes
