Keeping Flies Out During The Fall
October 5, 2018
You know it’s fall when you start seeing a number of flies buzzing about. Perhaps you’ve noticed them around your food or people struggling to swat them away. Flies are most certainly a pain to keep out of your home and off your property. There are many different types of flies you may be encountering. Feel free to check out our pest identification page to determine which ones you may be dealing with. Here’s a quick list of some of the common flies in Southern Florida:
- Fruit flies
- Horse flies
- Stable flies
- Green bottle flies
- House flies
- Humpback flies
On top of being a nuisance, flies can actually pose health risks as well. Because they easily fly from one thing to the next, it’s easy for them to pick up bacteria that can spread to another surface. Think of the filth they were just sitting on before making a pit-stop on your kitchen counter. Flies have been known to spread many types of diseases and illnesses. For example, the house fly is suspected of spreading up to 65 diseases to humans. These diseases include tuberculosis, cholera, typhoid fever, pinworm, tapeworm, and polio. A fly infestation can ultimately lead to severe problems, for both home and business owners.
One of the main attractions for flies is a source of food! Flies will feed off of human food, as well as trash or any decaying matter. They aren’t picky and will be extremely persistent. Not only will you be dealing with flies, but also their larvae. It’s common to find maggots in trash bins as flies use these areas as breeding sites. To try to prevent a fly infestation or get rid of flies from your home, here are a few techniques you can implement on your own.
- keep food in air-tight containers, well sealed
- quickly clean up any spills or crumbs
- cover trash bins and take the bags out frequently
- make sure there is no water build up in sinks or in drains (this can also be a breeding site)
- make sure to thoroughly disinfect all surfaces where flies land, for health purposes
On top of implementing your own strategies for relieving fly infestations, it’s worthwhile to call a professional. Sometimes fly infestations lead to loads of stress and frustration, as well as multiple failed attempts at getting rid of them. You may think they’re gone one moment, and then they’re back the next. In some cases, other pests may enter the home if they feed on flies, which leads to even more issues.
