Importance of Termite Prevention

Termites can be a problem throughout the year in Florida due to the lack of severely cold winters in the state, but they swarm in the spring. Swarming is the period of time when termites reproduce. After setting out to find a new place to nest they will shed their wings and settle into their new surroundings. The tropical rough-headed drywood termite will swarm from April until July, typically at night; the tropical smooth-headed termite can swarm all year round; and the Formosan subterranean termite swarms at night during the late spring months, while most other colonies swarm between March and May in the afternoon.

Termites are a huge problem for homeowners. More than two million Americans have termites in their homes and experience billions of dollars’ worth of structural damage annually, and most of that damage is not covered by property insurance policies. Most homeowners are unaware they have termites in their home until the swarming season when they find termite wings shed around their home.

Signs of Termite Infestation

During the spring months you’ll probably see swarms of flying termites inside and outside of your home if you have a termite infestation. At first, you may think they are flying ants, as they look similar. You may find wings left behind on your windowsills, floors, and kitchen counters. The wings look like little pieces of paper.

Other signs of termite infestation include visible wood shavings beside tiny holes in the wood of your home, such as the walls, furniture, or cabinetry. In severe infestations, you may actually have crumbling drywall and sagging floors. If you see pencil-sized mud tubes connecting soil to wood, or bubbling paint on walls – these are also signs of termite infestation – and if you see any of these signs, it typically means structural damage to your home has already taken place.

Importance of Termite Prevention

Because damage to your home usually occurs before you even know you have a termite infestation, it is extremely important to take steps to prevent termites rather than waiting until you see them or their damages to eliminate them. Calling Nozzle Nolen for an inspection and preventative termite treatments is the best way to protect your home from the damages caused by termites.
