How To Identify Flea Infestations

July 31, 2017

What do fleas look like? Well, to some of us, they look like a dog that won't stop thump, thump, thumping his leg as he digs deep at his neck. To others, they may look like a cat's back that won't stop twitching and that same cat chewing at his skin. Or perhaps fleas look like bites all around your ankles that won't let you sleep at night. Whatever fleas look like to you, they are definitely not a good thing to have in your home! But what do fleas actually look like? Let's take a close up look at these itchy pests, and explore some ways you may have picked them up.

What do fleas look like?

To the naked eye, adult fleas are around 2.5 cm long, and they range in color from yellow or red, to dark brown. Their bodies are thin and flat and look like a small dark, oval-shaped insect with a hard shell. They are most easily seen on light colored backgrounds. Under a microscope, a flea appears brownish red with yellow around the edges and it is opaque in spots. It has six legs, a striped shell, and a small head with two eyes, a pair of short, three-segmented antennae and simple tube-like mouthparts used for sucking blood.

What brings fleas into a house?

Fleas are amazing jumpers but they do not jump their way into a home; they hitch a ride on rodents and other wildlife. So, the key to keeping fleas out of your home is to keep wildlife and rodents out of your yard. Here are some steps you can take to deter these animals:

  • Install a fence that wildlife are not able to climb over or dig under.

  • Remove food sources and water sources in your yard that attract animals.

  • Make sure all exterior trash cans have covers that seal tightly. And make sure they are fixed in place, so they cannot be knocked over.

  • Keep your lawn neatly trimmed. This will make it less inviting to wildlife.

  • Remove any unnecessary clutter from your yard that provides animals with places to hide.

  • Get the help of a pest control company to employ exclusion strategies for rodents and wildlife.
