How to Get Rid of Termites in Port St. Lucie
March 21, 2018
As springtime approaches, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming--and the termites are coming to the Sunshine State. Technically, they never left. The warm, humid climate that defines the Sunshine State is a haven for the breeding and infestation of termites.
Generally, termites cause structural damage which can lead to more problems and a larger dent in your checkbook. They also cause damage to wood furniture, especially vintage furniture that hasn’t been treated, and can infest and cause damage to local vegetation and their ecosystems. Although there are many types of termites, they can be broken down into two separate categories:
The most common type of termite found in the United States is the subterranean termite. Subterranean termites cause over 95% of termite damage in the United States. In Port St. Lucie, the most common termites are subterranean termites, specifically the Formosan and Asian subspecies of subterranean termites.
Nesting Locations - Typically underground nests with complex tunnels to burrow from underground into basements, home foundations, etc. Some nests can be found above ground, but only in areas with enough moisture to support the colony mound.
Diet - Softwoods, books, cardboard, and other cellulose-based material.
Possible Damage/Signs of Infestation - Subterranean termites prefer to feed on softwoods, tunneling with the grain of the wood. Check for swollen floors/ceilings, buckling wood, and maze patterns in suspected areas. If tunnels are found, the tell-tale that it is subterranean termites is the presence of frass.
Drywood termites do not require a moist environment, instead, they get their moisture from the humid environment and the wood they eat.
Nesting Locations - Nests are located in the wood they feed on and prefer locations such as attics, walls, and furniture.
Diet - Hardwoods and cellulose-based materials, including furniture, books, and wood beams.
Possible Damage/Signs of Infestation - Like subterranean termites, check for maze-like tunnels, swollen floors/ceiling, and buckling wood.
General prevention tips include:
Removing cellulose-based debris
Sealing entry points
Liquid-based barriers around the home
