Ants are everywhere, they are found living all across the world, including throughout the United States and Florida. Most every homeowner has had to deal with these tiny terrors as they think they can make your property and home a place where they can live, feed, breed, and prosper. Many people view ants as being nuisance pests, and while it is very true that they are very annoying, they can also be destructive, causing damage to your Boynton Beach property and they can threaten your family and pets as well. The Carpenter Ant

The carpenter ant is both big in size and in its ability to cause destruction to Boynton Beach properties. Carpenter ants that live in Florida are typically reddish-orange and black in color; adults grow between 1/5 and 1/2 of an inch in length. Like most species of ants carpenter ants are attracted to properties and homes that provide them with easy access to food; once in your home, it is only a matter of time before they decide to tunnel through your home’s structural wood in order to create a satellite nest. Carpenter ants are especially drawn to wood that has been previously damaged by water and the damages that they can create can become quite extensive and expensive to repair. To prevent problems with carpenter ants it is important to reduce moisture levels in and around your home. Make sure that gutters are in good working order to direct water away from your home, fix leaky outdoor and indoor pipes, fixtures, and faucets, remove water-damaged wood from your home, and utilize dehumidifiers and air conditioners to reduce humidity levels; it is also a good idea to make sure that crawl spaces are being properly ventilated.

The Fire Ant

Fire ants are a very dangerous and very feisty species of ant. Adults grow from between 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch in length and are typically a uniform dark brown or reddish color. Fire ants are very invasive and very aggressive, they won’t hesitate to swarm and sting a person, child, or pet that comes too close to them or that disturbs their mound. Stings from fire ants are quite painful and should be avoided at all costs. Fire ants are drawn to warm, moist environments, therefore to prevent them from choosing your property to nest on it is a good idea to make sure that gutters are in good working order and that leaky outdoor fixtures are repaired. It is also beneficial to trim back trees and bushes away from the exterior of your home to allow the sun to reach the ground and dry out the soil. To prevent fire ants from easily accessing food sources on your property it is important to make sure that all trash is placed in cans with locking lids and to pick up any fruits and vegetables from your yard that have fallen from trees and in garden areas.

Bigheaded Ants

Don’t let their name fool you, the bigheaded ant is actually quite a small species of ant, only ranging in size from 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in length. This species of ant is divided into different categories of workers- minor workers and major workers. The minor workers have a body that is proportionate in size, while the major workers distinctive “heart-shaped” head is much bigger than the rest of its body. These ants mainly stay outside to nest on lawns, plant beds, and in potted plants. Bigheaded ants can often be found traveling together in a long line along foundations, driveways, and sidewalks; because they do live and travel so close to homes it is very common for them to invade Boynton Beach homes in large numbers while they are out and about foraging for food. To prevent these ants from invading your home it is important to inspect outdoor plants for bigheaded ants before bringing them inside. It is also a good idea to inspect the foundation of your home, sealing any spaces that are found and making sure that weather stripping around exterior windows and doors is intact.
