Five W’s and an H About Termites

What are the most common types of termites found in the home?
In Florida, there are four main species of termites: Eastern subterranean, Formosan subterranean, drywood termites, and Florida dampwood termites. The Eastern subterranean termite is the most common in the United States. It’s important to identify which kind of infestation you have, as treatment will be different depending upon the species.
What do termites eat?
Termites are detritivores who get nutrients from cellulose by feeding on dead plants and trees. Wood is their main source of food, which is problematic for us humans because wood is a common material found in things that we use every single day such as our furniture or the walls of our homes. While termites prefer wood, you can also find them eating paper or drywall.
Who is most at risk of a termite infestation?
Termites can feed on just about any type of wood so anybody who owns property that is made out of wood is most at risk.
When should you call a professional about your termite problem?
A professional should be called as soon as signs of an infestation are noticed. These signs include winged insects emerging during the evening and at night and wooden pellets smaller than a grain of rice. Advanced signs of an infestation can be detected by tapping the wood every few inches. If an infestation is in your home, then the wood will sound hollow. Also, when termites tunnel into wood, they sometimes get close to the surface, leaving a “blister” look on the wood.
Where are termites most commonly found in your home?
Drywood termites will be found burrowed into the wood of the area they have infested. Drywood termites, true to their name, like to eat wood that is dry. Home owners should check areas of the house that contain wood, such as crawl spaces or attics. Dampwood termites prefer moist wood and usually stay closer to the ground. Subterranean termites have to nest in the soil or near a water source in order to survive. The soil around the house should be checked for infestations. Under the house should also be checked for leaky water pipes as these are the ideal spots for a subterranean infestation.
Why should you be concerned about termites?
The biggest concern with termites is that they can cause incredibly costly damage to your property. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. residents spend about $5 billion a year to control and repair termite damage. Termites can cause extensive damage to a person’s home. Once an infestation has invaded a home, the homeowner needs to get a professional exterminator to get rid of the infestation and then has to repair the damage done to the home. The expenses can really pile up because of these little guys.
How can you detect a termite infestation?
Luckily an infestation can be detected before too much damage is done. Be on the look out for signs of an infestation such as cracked or bubbling paint, wood that sounds hollow when tapped, or mud tubes on exterior walls, beams or crawl spaces.
How should you deal with your termite problem?
The best way to deal with a termite infestation is to call an exterminator. Termite infestations can be vast and expansive, and they should not be taken lightly. Nozzle Nolen offers treatment options for drywood and subterranean termites. For treating drywood termites the most effective option is tent fumigation. This treatment is simple, effective and once the tent is gone, so are the termites and there is no residue left behind so no need to wash or clean furniture. If the infestation is just hurting your furniture, Nozzle Nolen offers vault fumigation treatment where only the furniture is treated. Nozzle Nolen also offers treatments for subterranean termites. The first treatment is an Advance Termite Baiting System. For this treatment, an expert comes and installs a pet and environmentally friendly bait system into your yard. First, they use this system to check if you have termites and, if you do, they use the same system to bait the termites. The termites eat an ingredient that will kill them and they take it back to the colony to kill the rest of the colony. It’s less invasive and takes only a few hours to install. The second treatment involves placing a pet-friendly liquid around the perimeter of your house. This liquid contaminates the termites that walk through it and other termites that the contaminated termite comes into contact with.
