Early Prevention Against Fall Rodent Infestations for Florida Homeowners
August 14, 2018
When it comes to preventing your Florida home from being invaded by rodents, there is no such thing as starting too early! Though fall is still quite a ways away, it is better to be safe than sorry, right? Rodents are a common household pest that can be found invading homes and disturbing families all across the country, even in sunny Florida! Rodents are a difficult pest to prevent because over time, as our territory has invaded theirs, they have come to depend on us to provide their basic needs — food, water, and shelter. Having rodents living inside your home is never a good idea. While their intention may not be to cause us harm, they still do! Rodents carry and transmit many diseases and bacteria that can make people become very ill, they contaminate the food sources and the surfaces inside our homes with their urine, feces, and saliva, and their constant need to chew can result in major damages to both the structure of the homes that they invade and any personal belongings that are stored inside. Taking the time to put rodent prevention measures into place and around your home now will save you a major headache later in the fall when they are actively seeking out a place to take shelter during the cooler winter months!
One of the best ways to prevent rodents from being drawn to your property is to get rid of the three main things that attract them to homes: food, water, and shelter.
Eliminate access to food sources both inside and outside of your home.
Inside, make sure that all human and pet food is stored in either the refrigerator or in airtight containers. Make sure that any crumbs and spills are always cleaned up immediately and make sure to pull out the large appliances in your kitchen, cleaning up any food debris that has collected behind them. Vacuum and mop the floors of your home regularly and wash dishes on a daily basis. Outside, make sure to store your trash in garbage cans with tight-fitting lids. Remove bird or other wild animal feeders from your property and make sure to pick up uneaten pet food in between feedings. It is also important to pick up any fruits and vegetables that have fallen to the ground in and around garden areas and to make sure compost piles are secure to prevent rodents and other pests from getting inside and feeding on them.
Eliminate access to water sources both inside and outside your home.
To eliminate water sources found outside of your home, it is important to first inspect your gutters, making sure to clear any debris build up so that water can run freely through them. Remove birdbaths from your property and make sure that wading pools are emptied when they are not being used. It is also important to fix any leaky outdoor faucets or hoses. To eliminate water sources inside of your home, repair any leaky faucets, fixtures, or pipes and make sure that any crawl spaces in your home are properly ventilated to prevent moisture from building up inside them.
Eliminate access into your home to prevent rodents from finding shelter inside of it.
Rodents can squeeze their bodies through very tiny spaces in order to gain access to your home, so making sure to find and eliminate all possible entry points, no matter how small they are, is a very important step in preventing a rodent infestation. Inspect the exterior walls and foundation of your home, sealing any openings found, replace loose or missing roof shingles, and repair any holes found along the roofline. Make sure to seal any spaces found around vents and utilities entering into your house, and make sure that vents have tight-fitting covers on them. Trim back trees and bushes away from the exterior of your home as rodents will use their branches to gain easier access to your home. It is also extremely important to avoid leaving the doors leading into your home or garage open for long periods of time. Inside your home, place weatherstripping on all exterior doors, and make sure that all window and door screens are completely intact.
In addition to making these changes in and around your home to prevent problems with rodents in the future, it is important to take the time to put a year-round residential pest control service into place!
