Are Roaches in West Palm Beach Dangerous?
October 31, 2016
The simple answer to this question is a resounding ‘yes’. Cockroaches in West Palm Beach are extremely dangerous if they are running through your home or your business. In fact, they are probably one of the most dangerous insects to invade properties in West Palm Beach. That is not to say that cockroaches in West Palm Beach are more dangerous than those in other cities across the globe, however. Roaches, no matter where you are, are hazardous. So why is it so perilous to have roaches cohabitating in your home?
Well, to understand the answer to that question, you must first understand a few facts about cockroaches. First of all, roaches eat a variety of foods. They will eat sweets, meats, starches, and even human hair, and they will also eat decaying matter when they are outside. The decaying matter may be in the form of decaying wood or it may be last week’s pot roast that wound up in the dumpster. Roaches have also been known to thrive in sewers where they survive by eating waste. Secondly, roaches prefer dark, moist areas. As far as they are concerned, the darker and wetter, the better! The thing about dark, moist areas is that they are perfect petri dishes for bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Lastly, it’s not like they take a shower or wipe their feet after rummaging in these dark, germ-infested areas. If their roaming brings them to a small crack or crevice in your foundation, they simply slip through and trade the harsh elements and predators in the outside world for your nice, fully - furnished and fully - stocked kitchen or bathroom.
Now at first thought, that may not seem so bad. After all, your home is clean and tidy, but then you really start to think about what that implies. These roaches that were just running through sewers and dumpster diving in the dumpster at the apartment complex two doors down are now scampering through your kitchen looking for a midnight snack. Not only are they crawling across your counters and through your butter dish, but they are also sneaking around in your silverware draw and pantry cupboards. Some species have even been known to snack on your face while you sleep, licking any leftover food or toothpaste from around your mouth and eating dandruff and hair on your scalp. Oh, and let’s not forget your toothbrush. After all, that leftover grime and residual toothpaste makes a great snack too.
Roaches are known to carry and transmit illnesses such as salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, and the polio virus. In fact, many of the illnesses we consider to be ‘the stomach flu’ or ‘something you ate’ may have actually been caused by a roach.
