A Guide to Termite Control for Florida Residents

June 21, 2019

As a homeowner, Termite control is an important aspect of protecting your home. When these pesky pests intrude, they can cause extreme damage to your house’s foundation and walls. In the Sunshine State, there are different species of termites to look out for, with the most common being the Asian subterranean, Formosan subterranean, native subterranean, and Florida dampwood. To help keep your home protected, here are a few tips for avoiding termites, and how to get rid of them if they do find their way inside.

Why Termites Infest Florida Homes

The ideal environment for termites is moist and damp areas with enough wood to provide the sustenance needed to grow their colony. This makes Florida homes the perfect target for infestation, which is why prevention should be the first priority. It can start with simple lawn care, such as removing any tree stumps in the yard, diverting all of the water from the irrigation system and gutters away from the home, and never leaving piles of wood near the house.

Perform regular inspections to ensure there aren’t any roof leaks or damaged shingles or windows, and if there are, have them fixed immediately. Additionally, make sure all of the potential openings into the house are properly sealed — such as windows and doors — and there are no cracks around the outside of the home.

How to Get Rid of Termites in the Home

If prevention doesn’t work and you discover an infestation, schedule termite control treatments immediately.

A typical preventative treatment would consist of a liquid application around the perimeter of the home. The termites won’t be able to detect its presence and will spread the product to the rest of the colony, eventually wiping it out completely.

If the termite issue is beyond prevention measures, treatment options may include: fumigation, tape and seal, or a no-tent treatment.
