Only female mosquitoes bite. They require human or animal blood to nourish and produce eggs.

When mosquitoes bite they inject their saliva, an anti-coagulant, into their victim to prevent a person or animal's blood from clotting. Our bodies auto-immune response to this is what creates the swelling, itching and burning.

After biting, the female mosquito takes a nap to assist in digestion.
